Publius Vergilius Maro is among the most celebrated poets in history, and his pastoral works, known as the Eclogae, have formed the foundation of entire genres of literature, music, and art. Inspired by the Idylls of Ancient Greek author Theocritus, Vergil takes the model of the bucolic poem, filled with shepherds and milk maids, songs of love and improvised poetic verse competitions (listen to Eclogue 3 to hear the original "rap battle"), and uses the setting to paint a mythic interpretation of revolutionary changes in the Roman world between 44 to 38 BC.
These poems made Vergil famous in his own time, and feature a stark union of visionary politics and unrequited love that turned the Partheniās from Mantua into one of the most reknowned figures in ancient history.
